An impressive 1.5 km range for meter readings!

By Adam Edström/Elektroniktidningen (2009-10-05 09:40:00 UTC)

The Swedish antenna specialist Smarteq has together with the Norwegian company Radiocrafts developed a technique for automatic meter readings of different meters with a reading range of 1.5 km.

The distance is a critical parameter when electrical-, gas-, water- and heat-meters should be automatically read. At the Metering Fair in Barcelona this week the Swedish company Smarteq and the Norwegian company Radiocrafts is showing their joint solution that will manage a reading range of 1.5 km.

The solution meets the criteria of the new OMS (Open Metering System) standard, and uses the wireless standard M-Bus for communication between meters and the controller unit (concentrator), called MUC (Multi Utility Controller). The MUC is expensive and it´s therefore important  with a long range reading capability, to keep the number of MUC´s down.

The combination of Smarteq directive high performance antennas and Radiocrafts radio modules RC1180-MBUS3 will now be marketed together.
